The Military Museum is primarily dedicated to collecting, studying and displaying cultural relics, objects, documents and literature on the revolution and the achievements of the people’s army under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), as well as on the military history of the Chinese nation. In addition, the museum also sponsors various exhibitions on special topics, current events and memorial issues around the central tasks assigned by the CPC, the Central Government and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), receives Chinese and foreign visitors, organizes related academic research and art creation activities, and conducts cooperation and exchanges with other museums both at home and abroad.
Originally, there were 10 permanent exhibitions mainly on the military history, namely, Exhibition Hall of Ancient Warfare, Exhibition Hall of Modern Warfare, Exhibition Hall of the Agrarian Revolutionary War, Exhibition Hall of the War of Resistance against the Japanese Aggression, Exhibition Hall of the War of Liberation of China, Exhibition Hall of New China’s Achievements in Defense and Army Building, Exhibition Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Exhibition Hall of Weapons, Exhibition Hall of Friendly Exchanges Between PLA and Its Foreign Counterparts and Gallery of Military Art.
The new plan for the exhibition system in the Military Museum got approved by the General Political Department and the Central Military Commission in August 2012. The new plan is mainly about the military history, complemented by displays of military science and technology and military art. The focus is on exhibitions of the CPC-led revolutionary wars, New China’s achievements in defense and army building, as well as special subjects on the people’s army and weapons. In addition, there are also exhibitions on Chinese military affairs through the ages, military science and technology and military art, as well as temporary exhibitions.
Since May 2012 when the exhibition building reinforcement and renovation began, all the permanent exhibitions in the building have been removed and closed down. Over 250 heavy weapons and equipment were moved to the south square in front of the exhibition building and kept open to the public. The temporary exhibitions housed in Boxing Plaza also stay open to the public.
Theme Exhibitions in Recent Years
The Military Museum has hosted a variety of large-scale theme exhibitions, in line with the core objectives of the nation and army. In recent years, major exhibitions held by the Military Museum were: “Heroes and Martyrs of the CPC during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression”, “Marking the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Long March of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army”, “National Defense and Army Building Achievements Since the Founding of New China”, “The Road to Rejuvenation”, “The Exhibition on Fighting Against the Earthquake with One Mind: Wenchuan Earthquake Relief”, “60 Glorious Years: Achievements in National Defense and Army Building”, “The Exhibition on Earthquake Relief of Yushu in Qinghai Province”, “The Exhibition on Zhouqu Disaster Relief in Gansu Province”, “The Exhibition on the Third Anniversary of Post-earthquake Reconstruction in Wenchuan”, “The Exhibition of Achievements in Non-warfare Military Actions”, “A Photo Exhibition: Scientific Development and Glorious Achievements” and the nationwide “Red Series” itinerant exhibitions. They were widely acclaimed by the central leadership as well as people from all walks of life, exerting immense impact in the society.
