Remnant of the Belt Eaten by the Red Army Soldiers During the Long March
Date: Period of the Long March Length: 26cm, Width: 4.8cm Material: Leather
From 1935 to 1936, the Red Army in the Long March were trekking in the Grassland of Northwest Sichuan, namely, the Songpan Grassland. Covering 15,000 square kilometers, the Grassland at an elevation of 3,000 to 4,000 meters above the sea level, has the White River and the Black River running through it, which makes it quite marshy. Such an environment coupled with the inclement climate and sharp difference in temperature between day and night made the circumstances very harsh for the soldiers. While trekking in the grassland, the Red Army often ran out of food, so they had to take whatever edible to satisfy their hunger. This is a remnant of a leather belt eaten by the Red Army soldiers when trekking in the grassland in the Long March. The item was collected by the Military Museum in 1959.
