According to rules of the Han Dynasty, the seals used by the emperor, empress and lords were called Xi while those used by noblemen of lower levels, generals and local magistrates were called Yin. The seal used by generals of a low level was called Zhang. The material, handle and ribbon of the seal will indicate the position of the seal holder. The seal exhibited here was used by generals and the intaglio inscription reads “Jun Jia Si Ma.”
