The Chinese character set for computers consists of four printed circuit boards, with each board comprising sixteen D2716 memory chips, of which the sixty-one EPROM chips hold 3,756 built-in common Chinese characters for the computer’s random call. From 1977 to 1981, Zhang Xiang, Chen Shuyao and Xu Xiaoyan with the second research institute of the PLA Second Artillery Force, after strenuous efforts, produced China’s first Chinese character set for computers. The promotion of the Chinese character set has greatly advanced the computerization of Chinese characters and made outstanding contributions to the unification of the computerized Chinese characters.
In 2004, it was donated to the Military Museum by the PLA’s Second Artillery Force.
