The “Two Tombs and One Satellite” Merit Medal for Peng Huanwu

Born in Changchun of Jilin province in 1915, Peng Huanwu graduated from the Physics Department of Tsinghua University in 1935, and went to study at the University of Edinburgh in 1938, under the tutelage of Professor Born. Then he studied at the School of Theoretical Physics, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies, Ireland. After returning home in 1947 he taught in Yunnan University, Tsinghua University and other universities. In 1950, he was involved in the preparation for the establishment of the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has served as deputy director of the ninth institute of the Second Ministry of Machine-Building, and head of the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Peng Huanwu was a world-famous theoretical physicist. He was elected academician of Irish Royal Academy of Sciences in 1948 and appointed academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955. He has contributed to the development of the interaction quantum transition theory and HHP meson theory. In 1999, the CPC Central Committee, the State Council and the Central Military Commission of China decided to hold a grand commendation ceremony to award the “Two Tombs and One Satellite” Merit Medal to each of the twenty-three scientists and experts who had made outstanding contributions to developing the “two bombs and one satellite” including Peng Huanwu.
In 2008, the medal was donated to the Military Museum by Peng Huanwu’s daughter-in-law Luo Li.
