Yang Liwei, born in 1965 in Suizhong ofLiaoning Province, joined the army in 1983 and graduated from the PLA Air Force Eighth Flight Academy in 1987. He ever served as a pilot of an air force aviation division and a squadron leader; he was rated as Class-I pilot. In 1998 he became one of the first batch of astronauts in China. After more than five years of training in dozens of subjects under eight categories, he passed the comprehensive assessment of the astronaut professional competence with excellent results and thus got selected as a candidate to conduct China's first manned space flight. On October 15, 2003, he flied to space by Shenzhou V manned spacecraft, becoming the first Chinese astronaut who materialized the dream of flying in space. In November 2003, the Central Committee of the CPC, the State Council and the Central Military Commission of China awarded the medal to the space hero Yang Liwei in recognition of his meritorious service.
